California is known for its coastlines, spectacular weather, and of course, beautiful vineyards and delicious wines. September happens to be California Wine Month and while we celebrate the juice all year round, people travel from all over this time of year to experience and celebrate the harvest season. Old Monterey Inn is located near Carmel Valley, known for high-quality wineries and vineyards scattered throughout the scenic rolling hills of Northern California. The wine tasting choices can be overwhelming so we thought we’d help you out with our list of our favorites. Below are a few top Monterey wineries we recommend. Book your stay with us, start planning your wine escape, and celebrate California Wine Month all season long! We’ll even throw in a bottle of one of our favorite local wines to enjoy during your stay.
With so many wonderful things taking place in the Monterey Peninsula, it isn’t a surprise that there is yet another spectacular event beginning to unfold. The 39th annual Monterey Wine Festival is scheduled to take place June 6th through June 7th at the Custom House Plaza in downtown Monterey. With a spectacular view of the harbor and bay, you can enjoy your day sampling the fantastic eats and of course the world class wine.
An addition to the festivities there will also be the 6th Annual West Coast Chowder Competition. With chefs from Seattle, San Francisco, Portland, and many other places coming to take on the local chowder kings of the Monterey Peninsula. Guests can sample or buy a cup of chowder, and vote for their favorites for the people’s choice award, comparing their pallets with that of the judges.
With a history of serving local wines, from our wine cellar, we at the Old Monterey Inn are the perfect place to stay for this fabulous event. Centrally located on the Monterey Peninsula, close to Carmel and Pacific Grove, and Located just a short walk from the Custom House Plaza; we are perfectly located so that you don’t miss a minute of the festival. Go enjoy the great food and wine, then come back and relax in our gardens at the Old Monterey Inn, with complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres from 4-6pm. We aim to make your stay as memorable as possible, and truly hope you choose to stay with us.
The Winemakers Celebration is just a 10 minute drive from the Old Monterey Inn, where you can enjoy some relaxation at our beautiful property while also enjoying some of the best wine Monterey county has to offer. In 2013 Wine Enthusiast named Monterey County one of the “10 Best Wine Travel Destinations” in the world. Napa County did not make the list that year; neither did any location in France.
Monterey County has more 43,000 acres of vineyards, producing not only amazing Chardonnay and Pinot, but also many other different varietals. Fifty three different types are grown in the county; Monterey produces 7 percent of California’s grapes.
Over 30 Monterey County wineries from 9 American Viticulture Areas (AVAs) will offer their wines for tasting at the Winemakers’ Celebration. Try rare wines – including library, reserve, and limited release labels – while rubbing elbows with the winemakers themselves.
On Saturday, May 2, 2015 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm there will be plenty of food from local restaurants and live music along Dolores Street in Carmel-by-the-Sea. I came across some really fun events happening very close to our Monterey bed and breakfast just a few weekends away on Friday June 1st, and Saturday, June 2nd. The “Wine Trolley” will pick up passengers Friday the 3rd at 11:00 am, a few blocks from here at the Portola Plaza, and take them on a memorable 5-hour tour of the fantastic local wineries!
You will climb aboard “Hattie the Magnificent Trolley”, and visit the best wineries in the area. Besides the fabulous vino, the scenery en route in Carmel Valley is magnificent! Cool and fun event!
Next on the list, that same weekend, are the awesome Ghost Tours of Monterey! This 90-minute trolley tour (which also picks up at Portola Plaza) tells epic tales of the Old Town and times of romance, drama, and intrigue! Visit ancient burial grounds, the ghost in the garden (not our garden!), hauntings, hangings, and frequent ghostly sightings! For more info click on the links above or call (831) 624-1700.
We hope to see you soon at our bed and breakfast in Monterey!
