Fabulous Sights and Activities in Monterey

Monterey Peninsula b&b

Are you a history and literature buff?  If so, Monterey is the place for you! The Monterey Peninsula is home to writers like Henry Miller, John Steinbeck, and Robert Louis Stevenson, and was the first city of California, the only import-receiving port in California for many years, and the home of the first theatre, brick house, publicly funded school, public library, and printing press. We are so proud of our history, in fact, that along certain streets you’ll find little yellow tiles upon which you’ll see the words “Path of History.”  Only every fifth tile will be in English though—Monterey is home to the Defense Language Institute and the Monterey Institute of International Studies, both of which produce graduates fluent in languages other than their mother tongue. But back to history—walk along the streets of downtown Monterey, and you’ll see:

•             Colton Hall, built in the 1840s and has been in continuous use since then, serving as a public school, a city hall, the sheriff’s office, and Monterey police headquarters;

•             Cooper-Molera Adobe, a house built over three generations that today boasts nearly two acres of gardens in the heart of downtown Monterey;

•             Larkin House, built during Monterey’s “Mexico Period” to serve as both a personal residence and general store, and even served as governmental headquarters!

The list goes on and on. Check out for more information including current ownership and public viewing times.

After strolling around downtown Monterey and getting your fill of our Spanish, Mexican, Colonial, and now international influences, you’ll be ready for a mid-afternoon nap!  Come back to our Monterey inn (we are just blocks away from downtown Monterey) and relax in your private Jacuzzi tub before our daily wine and hors d’oeuvres.

If, on the other hand, you are ready to explore more activities in Monterey, hop in the car, drive to Cannery Row, and with John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row in hand, walk up and down the street that is now steeped in history and literary mystique. You’ll see Ed Ricketts lab, the Bear Flag, and even Lee Chong’s grocery.

Hiking Big Sur

We imagine that after exploring Cannery Row, you’ll most certainly be ready for some first class relaxation at our romantic Monterey bed and breakfast, but if you defy the odds and are ready for more immersion into Monterey’s cultural past, get back in the car and drive south along CA Highway 1 to the Henry Miller Memorial  Library. Check out their website first and try to time your visit so that it aligns with one of their events!

By then, you’ll definitely be ready for some first-class pampering—let us arrange a massage for you in our on-site spa, or a romantic beach bonfire on picturesque Carmel beach!  We are so looking forward to your visit and hearing about all of your adventures!

How is a Bed and Breakfast Different than a Hotel?

breakfast table at our inn in montereyWe often hear the question, “What is a bed and breakfast, and how is it different than a normal hotel with a continental breakfast offering?”  This is a question we are proud to answer because we are proud of what sets us apart at our bed and breakfast inn in Monterey

Well, to start, we put out fresh cookies at 2:00 P.M. each afternoon.  Just two hours later, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm, we serve wine and hors d’oeuvres in our parlor—usually a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Sauvignon from a local Carmel Valley vineyard, and a selection of artisan cheeses.  The following morning we serve a two-course, gourmet breakfast and you can either join other guests at our beautiful dining room table, or you can enjoy breakfast in your room on trays. Breakfast at our inn in Monterey is served at 9:00 and the guests that join us in the dining room have commented that it feels like Thanksgiving dinner—and perhaps even better than Thanksgiving dinner because we do the dishes! Rest assured you will receive warm hospitality from our staff and the opportunity to interact with guests from around the world.  In fact, we’ve had guests from Switzerland, England, Australia, China, Spain, Brazil, Canada, and all regions of the United States just to name a few.  Wherever you are from, we are so excited to welcome you to the Old Monterey Inn, and make you feel like you are at home in one of the finest romantic getaway spots!

Our inn in Monterey provides a sense of camaraderie, and the opportunity to meet and chat with other guests.  We’ve seen many wonderful friendships begin at our breakfast table: one couple was staying with us to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary, and upon announcing this at the breakfast table, they were greeted with a warm serenade of “congratulations!”  Later that evening, a couple from another room approached our Innkeeper, Catherine, with a bouquet of flowers and asked if she could put the flowers in the room of the 10th anniversary couple when they were at dinner.  The note on the flowers said, “Congratulations on your 10th wedding anniversary—it’s something to be proud of, and we are so glad to have celebrated this event with you!” Cool!

Apart from breakfast, what sets us apart? The property of our inn in Monterey embodies privacy and peace and quiet on more than an acre of lush gardens.  The custom half-timbered English Tudor mansion remains true to its original form and beauty with all the 21st century conveniences added in, and a warm and welcoming ambiance that will make you feel like you’ve arrived at home!

The Old Monterey Inn is enshrined in beauty, luxury, relaxation, and most importantly, kindness.  We look forward to welcoming you to the Inn!

Behind the Scenes in our Romantic Monterey Bed and Breakfast

Walking up the steps to the front entrance of the Old Monterey Inn, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a secret, secluded garden.  In fact, there is beauty all around—flowers upon flowers, intertwining vines, succulents, and even straw flowers (ask to see them when you’re here because they’re delightful).  Our rooms and suites are similarly spectacular-elegantly, tastefully, and individually appointed.

Indeed, there is beauty all around.  But, some of the things that make the Old Monterey Inn wonderful are not immediately visible.  Ying Sun, the owner of the Inn, got married in the Inn’s traditional English-style hedge garden— the Old Monterey Inn is now the epitome of a beloved family-run business.  During your stay at our Monterey bed and breakfast, you’ll see Lawrence buzzing about helping out where help is needed and making sure that the Inn runs smoothly.  You may even see the two of them taking their dog Lucy for a walk in the evening.  At the Old Monterey Inn, it’s all hands on deck all the time.

They are accompanied by a similarly dedicated staff.  Aracely, the head housekeeper, has worked at the Inn for over 20 years, and has an unbelievable encyclopedic knowledge about all of the tiny little histories of the Old Monterey Inn.  She expertly manages her staff to make sure every detail is perfect for your stay.  She’s got a wicked sense of humor, and an astonishing eye for detail and quality.  She is such an asset to the Old Monterey Inn.

The Innkeeper, Catherine, is a native of Denver, Colorado and moved to Monterey last year to get a Masters of Public Administration at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.  After working and studying abroad, she stumbled upon the Old Monterey Inn when she was visiting Monterey months before the move, and was entranced by the warmth and beauty of the place.  She takes on much of the cooking and check-ins and is excited to make your stay perfect. She is fluent in Spanish and highly proficient in Mandarin Chinese.

So, there you have it!  Our staff is yet another reason your stay at the Old Monterey Inn will be a truly memorable and enjoyable experience!  We are proud to be a family-owned business, and proud that our staff at our Monterey bed and breakfast is so dedicated to excellence.

Romance and Christmas Magic Found at our Monterey Bed and Breakfast!

Romance at our Monterey Bed and BreakfastA few months ago we at the Old Monterey Inn posted a blog about the cutest couple who had just gotten engaged at our romantic Monterey Bed and Breakfast. This past week, we were honored to have them return to enjoy a luxurious Honeymoon in the very same room that they had gotten engaged in, the Brighstone Suite at our Monterey Bay Bed and Breakfast. The newlyweds, Mr. and Mrs. Joel and Paula Hamilton, were treated to our fabulous Ultimate Luxury Package, which includes an unforgettable limousine driven Wine Tour through the beautiful Carmel Valley, a romantic Couples Massage by firelight in our elegant Spa Room, fantastic dining packages, and more! I believe their Honeymoon Getaway was a huge success, and a memorable event for the new couple. We will certainly look forward to seeing them on an anniversary in the years to come!

I also would like to thank everyone who made our “Christmas at the Inns” event such a wonderful success. Our Monterey Bed and Breakfast is beautifully decorated for the holidays, and we received innumerable compliments on the decorations, ambiance created by the elegant Christmas songs played by Mr. Michael Martinez (the celebrated pianist from the Big Sur Marathon for you runners out there!), and of course, our freshly baked cookies! With the holiday decorations in place, and our warm fireplaces awaiting you, this is the perfect time to get away from your holiday stress, and enjoy a little pampering at the Old Monterey Inn.

We are currently offering our lowest seasonal rates, and we would love to have you keep us company this winter! Please give us a call or check our website for availability.

Don’t forget what a great present it would be for the people on your list to receive a Gift Certificate from the Old Monterey Inn!! We will take good care of them, we promise!!

Have a wonderful Holiday Season,

Our Monterey Bed and Breakfast Welcomes International Guests

Enjoying Breakfast

One of my favorite parts of the day is breakfast time at the Monterey bed and breakfast. The dining room is an elegant backdrop for the fantastic smells wafting from the kitchen. People are relaxing next to the crackling fireplace and getting to know each other while anticipating the next course to be served!

Conversations are always interesting, and I find it amazing how quickly the guests at our Monterey bed and breakfast find common interests to discuss. Especially noticeable, the other morning I scanned the happy faces at the table, and I realized we were fortunate enough to have five different countries represented over our Orange Blossom French Toast. While I served our ‘French Toast’ creation to the family from Paris (I was relieved when they loved it), I realized that the happy discussion among the guests involved people from France, Germany, Australia, Sweden, and the United States. During that same week, we also hosted folks from England, Ireland, and Brazil! They were talking about all kinds of things: travel, food and wine, education, and sports!

Summer always brings a large number of international travelers to the Monterey Peninsula, and we feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to introduce our international guests, and all of our guests to the fabulous part of the world we live in!

New Jellies at the Monterey Bay Aquarium!

Monterey bed and breakfastGreetings! We just heard some news from the Monterey Bay Aquarium!
Being one of the most popular attractions near our romantic getaway in CA, the Monterey Bay Aquarium should be considered a must see during your next visit to the Monterey Peninsula.
Our guests at our Monterey bed and breakfast continue to return from their aquarium experiences raving about the variety of sea life and the beautiful displays. The folks at the Monterey Bay aquarium continue to outdo themselves as they have just announced the addition of the “Crown Jellies” to the already fabulous Jellies Experience.
Being the first aquarium in the world to display these amazing animals, we feel very fortunate that the aquarium is just a few short miles from our Monterey luxury B & B. Also during your visit, make sure you meet Abby the sea otter and her playful friends!
The Old Monterey Inn Bed and Breakfast has two-day VIP passes for sale, no waiting in line! Monterey Bay Aquarium is open from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm (8 pm on weekends) during the summer. See you there!
