Historic Tor House on the Monterey Peninsula

In an earlier blog post, we discussed the historic adobes here—there are even more historic sites in Monterey, so history buffs, perk up your ears!  Have you heard of poet Robinson Jeffers?  Born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, he moved to Carmel, California as a young man, and upon arriving to the rugged, unique Central California his soul breathed a sigh of relief—he was home!

He spent most of his adult life writing in the morning and building the Hawk Tower and the Tor House.  He built the Tor House for his family, a wife and two sons, and constructed the Hawk Tower as a retreat for his wife and a magic place for his two sons.  He used granite boulders to construct both the house and the tower.  The Hawk Tower is indeed a feat and a definite marvel of the historic sites in Monterey—completed in less than four years, he used wooden planks, and block and tackle to build the tower (which he built almost completely by himself).  The site is also home to a beautiful English Cottage garden.

The Tor House offers tours at $10/adult, and because the tours are private, they must be reserved in advance.  In spite of being so beautiful, the Tor House remains somewhat unknown, so you’ll become one of special few who has visited the historical and stunning home.

The house is a ten-minute drive from our romantic Monterey Inn, and would be a perfect mid-morning trip.  Enjoy a two-course, gourmet breakfast at 9:00, spend a few hours wandering around Tor House, enjoy a picnic lunch along Carmel’s beautiful coast, come back to our Monterey bed and breakfast for an early-afternoon nap, and then drop down into our parlor for wine and hors d-oeuvres!  We sure think it sounds like an eventful and relaxing day—and certainly a way to get to know the Monterey Peninsula’s history and beauty more personally.

Fantastic Events are Coming Up in the Monterey Area!

We are so fortunate to have our beautiful Inn in Monterey, California! Not only are we located in one of the most scenic spots on the West Coast, but we are lucky enough to have an ongoing calendar of world class events to enjoy while you are visiting! There really is something for everyone!

First I must mention the Pebble Beach Food & Wine Festival, touted as “The Culinary Event of the Year”, coming to the area April 12 through April 15th. Sip award winning wines and rub elbows with some of the most famous chefs in the world: Thomas Keller, Jacques Pepin, and Masaharu Morimoto, to name just a few! It is an extravaganza of food and wine in one of the ultimate settings in the world: Pebble Beach, just a few short minutes from our Monterey Bay Inn! It doesn’t get much better than that!

For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, the Sea Otter Classic is held at Laguna Seca Raceway from April 19th to April 22nd. Billed as one of the largest cycling events in the world, over 10,000 cyclists (beginner to elite, mountain and road) compete in every cycling category imaginable. Sea Otter is also home to the largest consumer bike expo in North America, and draws close to 50,000 cycling fans. It is a great event to watch or compete in!

The weather is great, and we would love to have you join us for any of these events, or just to get away to our Monterey Bed & Breakfast!
